Uttar Gaya Temple

Religious Significance:

A Sacred Site for Ancestral Rites:
According to Hindu belief, Uttargaya is considered an excellent place for the salvation of ancestors. It is believed that performing Shraddha (ancestral rituals) here brings peace to the souls of departed forefathers.
Especially during the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) of the month of Bhadra, on the occasion of Gokarne Aunsi (Father’s Day in Nepal), thousands of devotees visit this site to perform Pitri Tarpan, Pind Daan, and to take the holy bath in Gokarna.

Religious Importance of the Gokarna Holy Bath:
Bathing in the Bagmati River at this site is believed to wash away sins.
There is a tradition of ritual bathing in the river followed by Pind Daan and Tarpan during Shraddha.

Gaya and Uttargaya:
Just like Gaya in India, Uttargaya in Nepal is regarded as a sacred ancestral pilgrimage site for Hindus.
There is a saying:
"Gaya Tarpanottaragaya Pind Daanam Shreyaskaram"
which means:
"Tarpan (water offering) in Gaya and Pind Daan (rice-ball offering) in Uttargaya are most auspicious."
