Deshegaon
Just a little east of the Gokarneshwar Temple lies a historic settlement known as Desh. According to ancient scriptures, Deshegaon is considered the oldest city in Nepal. These texts refer to it as “Gokarneshwah Deshe,” which is now commonly known as the Old Gokarna Village.
The area is culturally significant, with landmarks such as the Taleju Temple, an ancient chaitya (Buddhist stupa), and a traditional platform where the Mukunda Naach (a traditional masked dance) is performed.
Some archaeologists believe that this place might have been the capital of Nepal during the Lichhavi period, although this has not yet been definitively confirmed. While there may not be concrete proof that it was the capital, there are many indications that the village dates back to the Lichhavi era.
Unfortunately, the 2015 earthquake destroyed most of the old houses in the village. Many of these homes have been rebuilt in modern architectural styles. However, if the municipality encourages the reconstruction of new homes that blend traditional styles with modern features, the authentic character of Deshegaon could be preserved.
As the oldest organized settlement within the Kathmandu Valley, Deshegaon has recently begun attracting more tourists, eager to explore its rich cultural and historical heritage.
