beautiful water

Sundarijal is a convergence of religious, natural, and man-made heritage. It is home to nearly two dozen religious sites, including Bagdwar, the temple of Sundarimai, and the ashram of Sage Dadhichi. According to the Bagmati Purana, the water from this place is considered essential for the Bolbam pilgrimage.

One of the main attractions here is the dam and reservoir of Nepal’s second-oldest hydroelectric project, which is not only visually stunning but also culturally and functionally significant. This reservoir has twofold importance—first, its beauty, and second, the confluence of the Bagmati and Syalmati rivers.

The water flows through beautiful stones, sometimes hidden and sometimes visible. After receiving the blessings of Goddess Sundarimai, the path continues toward the pond where water is collected for electricity generation, which is equally impressive.

Sundarijal is a renowned religious and tourist destination located in Kathmandu District, known for its natural beauty and spiritual ambiance. According to Hindu beliefs, this site is considered a sacred place of penance for Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, attracting large crowds of devotees during special festivals each year. The Sundarijal Temple draws many worshippers, and the water flowing through this area is considered holy — bathing in it is believed to be a virtuous act. This place also holds significance for Buddhist followers, reflecting religious tolerance and diversity. The trekking routes that begin from Sundarijal are also linked to spiritual journeys. The lush greenery, cool waters, waterfalls, and serene environment provide spiritual peace to all who visit. Sundarijal is also the starting point of the Melamchi Drinking Water Project, which adds to its strategic importance. Combining religious, natural, and touristic appeal, Sundarijal is increasingly recognized as an ideal destination close to the capital.
